The nurses kept talking about how RSV should have kickstarted because the college kids were back. We are not excited to be the first baby in the NICU to get it. Poor little Evan started a slight cough yesterday. We both noticed it and told nurses this was new. They immediately watched out for more signs. Sometime in the night he started to be more congested with nasal gunk. It was stringy and whitish/clear. They sent a sample to the lab and later that day it was confirmed RSV.
Some good news among this. He is already at Primary Children's. He also is very strong. He can cough, sneeze and gag like no other. Doctors say for most babies this is dangerous if they could not do those things. He isn't in any stress and his heart rate is normal. Evan has normal breathing for now with just bouts of coughing that bring up phlegm every 30 to 45 minutes. He still stays asleep for most of the time as his body is fighting virus. He doesn't have a fever and requires no oxygen at this point. Nurses just suck out his airways every couple of hours and his oxygen level has been great. They did say that if it gets worse they just have a free flowing oxygen mask for those times that he might not catch his breath. He has a full time nurse right next to him 24 hours a day. I also sit next to him as much as I can. He is inclined right now and does a little better without holding him. I keep his mouth clear when he coughs with a bulb syringe and comfort him when he complains like the picture above. That was taken right after a suctioning of the nose by the nurse. He complains about that more than he does his cold. For the most part he looks extremely peaceful and we are waiting the virus out. He is still eating like he has been but the gag reflex is a little strong. We only let him try to feed for 30 minutes and then tube him. He has to keep up his strength. He is still gaining weight though. We are so proud of Evan and sorry that his first cold had to be RSV. (A very common virus that all kids have before they are 3)
